Family Talk

By Dave Phillips

So many good things are taking place at Germantown! We are happy to have people looking for ways to serve. As new members are baptized or place membership with us, we ask them to look through our ‘New Members Packet’ which explains some of the ministries in progress within our congregation and also provides a form by which they can mention areas in which they would like to serve. If you would like to serve in new areas - as your schedule allows for more specific, regular ministry with the church - just let the office know and they can let the person coordinating that ministry know of your interest.

Speaking of ministries with which we have been involved, let me explain our area-wide service which takes place tonight. If you read this after the fact, at least you will know what we are trying to accomplish.

As Memphis has grown and technology has developed, the area-wide services for ‘getting to know each other’ has changed. Video recordings (and our VHS systems at home) replaced the week long “Training for Service Series” held long ago (1954-1987). Our “Growing By Sharing Services” ended when, after a couple of years, we had shared all the programs we were doing. Other congregations joined together for a service, or swapped preachers in order to get to know each other, but no area-wide event occurred. In the spring of 2008, the Germantown and Midtown churches of Christ met together at the Germantown building and asked other congregations to join us. We then moved it to Memphis Harding Academy (a neutral site, we thought) for several years, but the general consensus among attendees was the our building was more convenient for all that wanted to come.

This is not about ‘racial reconciliation.’ That should be natural in the family of God. It is about God’s people from all over the Memphis area coming together to worship. God loves ALL of God’s children! Praise God for His grace!
