Family Talk

By Dave Phillips

Can you believe it? August is here! We begin one of my favorite monthly themes as we continue to work on our annual theme of “For Such a Time as This.” Yes, it is a timely theme because of all the changes that are taking place in our lives - both individually and collectively. Think of how many births, baptisms, deaths and graduations have occurred recently. This may be an odd way of looking at the topic, but it is so true, that we are adding people to the kingdom of God, strengthening people in their faithful walk of holiness, and saying goodbye to those who are going to be with the Lord as part of His kingdom. What a privilege to be in the only group in the world specifically designed to be in Heaven. Now, let me be careful here. What I am saying is what Jesus said, “There is no other way to the Father but through Me” (Jn. 14:14). So, we are working together in the greatest mission ever given to man, helping lead people to Jesus. What an awesome responsibility!

This month’s theme is a “Vision that Guides.” I’ve enjoyed talking with several people about their response to that phrase that will focus our thoughts. What has been interesting is the many Bible passages they bring up that discuss ‘visions.’ I must let you in on my approach. The foundational text will be Proverbs 29:18, but we’ll be careful when we apply the concept to our own lives. Read this text from several different translations so that you get the actual meaning of ‘vision’ and ‘perish.’ That’s where we’re going on Sunday. We need guidance. God gives us a focus.

I trust that you are remembering our world, our country, our state and our city as you pray. World events do impact individual lives. The more people we know around the world, the more important that becomes. We are, as a congregation, involved in many works abroad and many in our own ‘back yard.’ There are visitors at most all of our services and we have the privilege of inviting them and welcoming them to our worship services. Let’s continue to do what we are known for - that is greeting those that are new and encouraging them in their search for the Lord.
