Family Talk

By Dave Phillips

When you are in the ‘midst of the storm,’ you may be tempted to think that nothing productive is happening—that everyone is just busy. But busy-ness is evident when hard work is taking place. For example, the youth are in the midst of a great summer of action. While some were at Mid-South Youth Camp, there were activities taking place with our interns here on our ‘campus.’ We are blessed to have JP leading our youth program and Ella, Reagan, and Luke have been working in our youth area as well working with young people that did not go to camp. So, it is no small effort to keep something going for everyone during the summer—and teens, parents and adult helpers are doing their best to make Summer 2026 a great one! Praise God for all their efforts!

Our Summer Series is going well. It is good for the congregation here to be able to hear men that preach in area congregations or teach in our Christian universities, in order that we might demonstrate that we are reaching out to our brothers and sisters in the area, not just Germantown. I know that when I have the opportunity to go to other congregations, it is also a time to bring some greetings from Germantown and allow us to show that we are truly a part of a ‘brotherhood’ in the area. God is at work in many congregations in the cities as well as in various areas in the city of Memphis. We are blessed. I hope you are encouraging our speakers each Wednesday night as they come speak here. There is never a time when encouragement isn’t appropriate.

We are even now preparing for our fall quarter with classes that will help us build our spiritual walk with the Lord. I’m working toward trying to have classes for every facet of Christian need. That is, we need classes for those that (1) need a ‘refresher’ on the ‘basics of the faith,’ what are my needs in life?, (2) a class on Bible history or church history, answering the question of what God is doing in the past, (3) a class on the actual text, addressing the question of ‘what God expects of us,’ and (4) a class on improving our ministry, addressing the question of ‘how can I serve more effectively or grow a maturing ministry.’ All of these are important. I trust that our teachers will enjoy a brief break from the summer schedule, enjoy the speakers who are coming in to inspire us, and be prepared for a great fall quarter where we re-engage our smaller groups studying the Bible together.
