Family Talk

By Dave Phillips

You knew that this summer would be a challenging one. The weather has been far more moderate than it could be. After all, this is Memphis. And it is officially summer. So, we are glad to have many activities at Germantown that have captured our attention and our focus. The youth group is working well with JP, the interns and the youth are all engaged in constant works and activities that are certainly bringing about physical and spiritual growth. Praise God for the energy, the health and the spiritual focus on serving God to the best of our ability.

We are also glad to officially welcome Josh Lanius on the scene. As he situates himself and prepares to enter his work as a Communication Specialist, we are excited to see him and work with him as a brother in Christ, focusing on sharing the good news of Jesus Christ through a variety of avenues that will benefit us all - but most importantly - raise the awareness of the work of God in all of our lives. We are thrilled to have him with us!

We officially begin a new monthly theme today that runs in a complimentary way with our theme for 2026, which is “For Such a Time as This.” Our monthly theme is “Wisdom That Guides.” I have to admit this is my favorite focus (as well as my favorite theme slide, thanks to Clint Till) so far this year. Of course, there is just so much material in the Bible about seeking wisdom. I wish there was a way to preach a 30 minute sermon that was able to capture the thousands of felt-needs and Godly responses that are given for each one of us. Yes, I know. Impossible for any human being to comprehend these truths, much less expound on them. I keep thinking of the doxology (short hymn of praise) that seems to jump out of Paul’s mind when he writes his letter to the Romans. He said, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments and unfathomable His preparing. I’ll give it my best shot. Let’s read through the book of Ecclesiastes and see if we can’t learn from the wise man what ways (Rom. 11:33)! I’ve been studying praying and it means to love God with all of our hearts, trust Him with each of our lives and serve Him with all of our might.

May God continue to bless each one of us as we serve together. May this church always be a place where God is revered.
