People Do Have Power
People do have power.
A little shepherd boy named David would grow to be the King of Israel.
He could kill a lion and a bear when they threatened his sheep.
He could kill a giant when he threatened God’s people.
But he couldn’t save his own boy when his son decided that he wanted to take his father’s kingdom.
Some of the saddest words in the Bible are David’s when he learns of his son’s death. He wept bitterly, saying, “Oh Absalom; my son, Absalom. If only I could have died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son.”
David was such a great man – a man after God’s own heart. But some of his greatest sorrows involved his own children. I don’t know what he could have done, if anything, to avoid what happened to Absalom.
But I know this – David grieved over Absalom. It would have been so much better if a loving parent could have welcomed a loving child back home before it was too late. People do have power.
