Good news - it’s all about Jesus!
Our theme for this year is Good News. Our focus during the month of December is about Jesus Christ. Of course, we’ve spent the entire year of Sunday morning sermons on the gospel of John as the life and purpose of Jesus is presented in a very convincing manner. The book of signs (chapters 1-12) followed by the book of glory (chapters 13-21) all have the same intent to encourage readers to not only believe in Jesus but to trust Him as our Lord and Savior. Since this is a special day for us as we step back to ‘passing emblems’ during the Lord’s supper, I thought it would be a very appropriate to stop and consider why we are doing what we do.
Two appropriate statements are emblazoned in my mind. They weren’t written in a book by some deep thinker or displayed on a car bumper as a part of bumper sticker theology. But I remember the very bulletin board that displayed these two poignant statements. The statements are:
You cannot lead where you will not go.
You cannot teach what you do not know.
So, today we look at the connection between the faithfulness of Jesus to the task he took upon himself and the way we reflect our appreciation, gratefulness and devotion to that sacrifice in the partaking of the Lord’s supper. Every Christian should think of the responsibility we have to live the will of God before we try to teach it - and be devoted to the cause of Christ every day of our lives. Here is the obvious implications of the words above.
Don’ t expect someone to do something you are not doing.
Don’ t practice something you cannot explain.
It is a pleasure to be able to serve God together at Germantown. There is a task for every person. There is a responsibility we have to God and to a local congregation. If you have not let the office know of the work you would like to do, please call them and tell them you would like to fill out the Skills and Interests Sheet. The deacons are to use these names as they look for help in carrying out their tasks.
